In the 18th and 19th centuries in America there were a number of "gentlewomen" that would open their homes up as schools. These schools taught the young girls of the towns and villages the accomplishments a young lady would need to secure a good marriage. These accomplishments would be needlework, writing, painting, music, french, and dance. Mrs. Esther Pierce has brought her needlework class outside to take advantage of the beautiful spring weather. A prominent lady of the town has brought her daughter along to see the school and meet Mrs. Pierce.
